World Thinking Day 2019 will be held on Saturday February 23rd from 10a-1:30pm at the Westfield Intermediate Cafeteria.
For new leaders, WTD is an event where girls learn about different countries from around the world. All countries presented are participants in WAGGGS (World Association of Girl Guide and Girl Scouts) and this event serves as an opportunity for the girls to learn what scouting looks like around the globe!
You will select a country to present and check to be sure they are on the list WAGGGS countries here. Then your troop will learn about this country. Here are some examples of what to help the scouts search:
- Where is the country located?
- What is life like in this country?
- What does scouting look like in this country? What do uniforms look like? What activities do they do?
- What is the Girl Scout/Girl Guide law and promise?
- What foods are common in this country? Most troops have a small sample of food from their country.
- Any other interesting facts from this country!
Then your troop will create a trifold board or other display about their country. On their board the girls will share their research. For 2019, please be sure to have a copy of the Girl Scout/Girl Guide law or promise on your board!
During the WTD event, you will set up your “country” and half of your scouts will present during the first session while the other half travels around to the different countries. Then we will have our intermission and during the second session the girls will switch roles. The group that travelled will present and the group that presented will travel.
All Daisy troops are invited to “travel” during World Thinking Day. They will rotate to each table and learn about the different countries but do not present. This is recommended for first year Daisies. Second year Daisies can choose to travel or present! Your Daisy troop will be assigned to travel during Session 1 or Session 2.
Session 1: 10am-11:15am
Presentation of bags: 11:20-11:40am
Session 2: 11:45-1pm
**Times will be finalized after registration is complete!
The theme of this year’s World Thinking Day is LEADERSHIP.
Prior to World Thinking Day, have your troop complete three of the activities listed in these level appropriate guides from Girl Scouts of America. These activities encourage girls to explore different ways to become leaders and how to be the change they want to see in the world. Be sure to include “pack your bag” as one of the activities. Troops will be presenting their “bags” during the intermission on the day of the event.
For this year, we are offering a FREE patch for any troop that picks a country that was NOT presented at World Thinking Day 2018. The list of countries presented in 2018 were:
Please use this link to pick your country.
Once I have received your request, I will email you your country confirmation along with a link to pay. World Thinking will be $1 per scout for troops that choose a country NOT on the list above and $2 per scout for troops who choose to present one of the above listed countries. Traveling Daisies will be charged $2 per scout. All scouts will receive a patch and additional profit will be donated to the JoSheWe service project.
